How social capital and social infrastructure is taking centre stage

Opportunity

Together with Emergency Management Victoria (EMV), we brought together leaders from across government and the community to participate in a high-level strategy session at the Victorian Emergency Management Institute (VEMI) in Mount Macedon.

The Masterclass focused on the role of social capital and social infrastructure in building resilience across communities to aid disaster recovery.

Our joint Masterclass with EMV gave Victorian leaders a rare chance to hear directly from global social capital expert Professor Daniel Aldrich and ask questions.

Our approach

Resilient Ready is about turning government policy and academic insights into actionable everyday behaviours, and our Masterclass with EMV allowed participants to explore and pinpoint areas where social capital ties are weakest or strongest.

Hosting the Masterclass was Amanda Leck, GAICD, former Deputy Commissioner Capability & Risk, at the Victorian Emergency Management Institute (VEMI) in Mount Macedon, joined by Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp.

Cross government representatives came together for half a day to talk about the importance of embedding social capital and social infrastructure into policies, programs and data measurement.

We used real evidence-based examples of how and where social capital has moved the dial on disaster recovery.

It was great to discuss connections and places where we build trust and connections with Victorian leaders who are at the forefront of driving positive change.

Outcomes

Participants left with a much deeper and more nuanced understanding of the long-term benefits of social capital and social infrastructure in disaster recovery.

The Masterclass also opened a dialogue with senior bureaucrats and community leaders, which we hope will continue to grow the focus on social capital and social infrastructure to strengthen community resilience.
