Learn more about Social Capital

Resilient Ready is collaborating with the Omeo Region Community Recovery Association (ORCRA) to run a bespoke project to map social capital across six hubs in the region.

Hub communities include:

  • Anglers Rest
  • Benambra
  • Ensay/Ensay North
  • Omeo
  • Swifts Creek
  • Tambo Crossing

Surrounding communities are invited to participate through their nearest hub listed above.

This 4-month project will put focus on building local understanding and acceptance of the important role social capital (people connections) and social infrastructure (places where people connect) plays in building community preparedness to unexpected events.

I can't wait to connect with the community members across Omeo to talk about the value of social capital.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the background to this project?

The Omeo Region Community Recovery Association (ORCRA) has taken a strategic approach to understanding community perspectives about bushfire recovery and what is required to generate increased levels of resilience in the Omeo region in Victoria.

A survey of community members identified seven priority areas of combined concern leading to the

  • Omeo Region Disaster Resilience Plan; and
  • Local Community Emergency Management Plans for seven townships

While this work informs Emergency Management planning, resourcing and flow of information, the communities asked how they can be better prepared using the plan in a more detailed way.

Recent public meetings found that some gaps in knowledge, resources, preparedness, management and recovery from the fires can stem from the relationship between people and organisations, including between community members and external agencies.

ORCRA has identified a critical next stage in its Resilience Plan enhancement by putting focus on understanding:

  • bridging ties within six community hubs and between hubs in the region; and
  • linking ties between community people and those from external services

Visit our social capital page for more information on bridging and linking social ties.
