Building stronger connections, confidence and community-led action

Read case study

Local people bring knowledge, relationships and ideas that are essential to community resilience.

Resilient Ready partnered with the City of Casey to help residents turn those strengths into practical, locally led initiatives aligned with the Climate Resilient Casey Plan.

Working with two community groups—across the Coastal Villages and Hampton Park—we supported participants to identify shared priorities, build connections and develop initiatives suited to their community.

The project combined facilitated conversations, collaborative planning and hands-on support to strengthen local leadership and relationships with Council.

Community-led resilience takes time, trust and practical support. In Casey, we helped residents build the connections and confidence to turn their ideas into action.

What the Casey project involved

Understanding each community

We worked with Council to understand local backgrounds, existing networks and community priorities before bringing participants together.

Each group started with different interests, connections and capacity. Our approach gave people time to find common ground and agree on what they wanted to achieve.

Building connections and local leadership

Through ongoing facilitated sessions, we helped participants explore resilience, develop a shared purpose and build confidence working together.

Council staff participated throughout the process, strengthening relationships between residents and the people who could support their ideas.

These connections built social capital within the groups, across local networks and between community members and Council.

Turning ideas into practical initiatives

We supported each group to develop an initiative that reflected its priorities and available volunteer capacity.

In Blind Bight, Warneet and Cannons Creek, participants established Casey Coastal Villages Resilience Support. We helped the group explore its purpose, governance needs, identity and future activities.

Members brought disaster preparedness into a local Community Fire Day through an interactive treasure hunt, making learning accessible for adults and children.

In Hampton Park, a smaller core group developed the “Be Ready, Casey Community” sticker initiative. With 13,000 stickers produced, the initiative created a visible starting point for conversations about preparedness and community connection.

Supporting ownership beyond the project

As the Coastal Villages group gained confidence, we gradually stepped back from leading meetings, supporting members to make decisions and progress activities themselves.

By project completion, the group was running its own planning sessions and developing future initiatives.

In Hampton Park, participants built stronger relationships with Council and foundations for further community involvement.

Evaluation and a final insights report captured progress, lessons and recommendations to inform future Council initiatives.
