Young Farmer Business Program (YFBP), an initiative of the NSW Department of Primary Industries

Preparing young farmers for disruptions and disasters

Opportunity

Resilient Ready was approached to develop an innovative micro-learning program to build resilience capabilities in the next generation of young farmers and fishers across three regional communities in NSW.

This program was funded by the Young Farmer Business Program (YFBP), an initiative of the NSW Department of Primary Industries.

Our approach

After a briefing from the Young Farmer Business Program about their goals, Resilient Ready CEO + Founder Renae Hanvin established steering groups in each region to ensure the specific needs of local communities would be reflected in any solutions developed.

Local community stakeholders and farming/fishing business champions were invited to take part in the steering groups.

Feedback was collected and used to choose the focus of each module, and the resulting personalised toolkit, including local and relevant industry links, was then presented to and reviewed by each regional steering committee. The NSW Department of Primary Industries then approved the final content prior to roll-out.

Using storytelling and peer-to-peer learning, our BCR Toolkits cut through in a way other approaches do not, with participants gaining a greater understanding of what it means to run a sustainable business and be resilient in the long term.

Driving resilience and sustainability through micro-learning

Outcomes

We co-designed and delivered a free three-month program for every young farmer and fisher across three regional areas in NSW.

Working with local steering groups, Resilient Ready created personalised toolkits that delivered bespoke micro-learning modules featuring video case studies from local peers. Nine well-attended, in-community workshops were also held across the three regions.

Data collected across the three programs has been shared to identify current capabilities and vulnerabilities across each local farming business community.

These findings will assist in bridging the knowledge gap for the next generation of young farmers and fishers, to help them secure their futures so they can thrive in agribusiness.
